John and Jeanie Wicker opened the restaurant in 1996 with food and live music at the center of the idea. In May 2008 they sold it to employee Tommy Noblett. That history places Comet among Dilworth's longstanding gathering spots, with decades of service behind the Park Road address.
Pimento cheese, bacon and grilled onions distinguish the Comet Classic burger. The Carolina version takes chili, mustard, onion and slaw, while the steakhouse burger adds Swiss cheese, portobello mushroom and horseradish sauce. Most burgers are moderately priced and include a side; the larger Biggz doubles both the beef patties and American cheese.
The scratch-made black bean and corn burger is an option for a meatless meal, and the kitchen lists vegetarian Carolina dogs as well. Homemade pimento cheese can also become its own grilled sandwich. Weekday food specials move from Monday meatloaf to Tuesday patty melts, Wednesday Philly sandwiches, Thursday chicken sandwiches and Friday fish, so the day of a visit can influence the order.
